In 2010, climate activists from southeastern Middlesex County towns came together to exchange ideas and share updates on local climate action initiatives. This initial gathering included representatives from Arlington, Belmont, Bedford, Lexington, and Winchester, who were inspired by the innovative programs their fellow activists were leading. The enthusiasm sparked by this meeting led to the idea of organizing an event to bring together climate activists from across the region for inspiration and collaboration.
As a result, Sustainable Middlesex (Sus Mid) was born. Since its inception, Sus Mid has organized annual meetings that highlight the most impactful climate programs from local communities across Massachusetts. These events also feature prominent speakers who provide updates on the latest developments in climate policy and action within the state. For instance, at the most recent event, "Carbon Countdown," attendees heard from Massachusetts Climate Chief Melissa Hoffer, and in previous years, State Senator Mike Barrett has been a recurring speaker.
Over the years, these gatherings have attracted up to 500 climate activists from all over Massachusetts, fostering a strong network of individuals dedicated to advancing climate action at the local level.
